We offer supports that are aimed at helping your child achieve results that will have a noticeable impact in their day-to-day environment. To learn about who we can support and how we do it, see below.
Who We Support
At Umbrella Speech, we have the most experience working with children between the ages of 2 years and 12 years of age.
We have skills and resources to support children who are still developing their:
Speech Skills
‘Speech’ refers to the ability to say sounds clearly, so that we can be understood by others. It is common for children to have some difficulty saying all of the sounds while they are young; however by school-age, children should have very few errors. If you are concerned about your child’s speech sound development, we can help!
Language Skills
‘Language’ is used to describe both saying or writing words, sentences and stories, and also understanding words, sentences and stories. If a child has difficulties with language, they may have trouble telling you their ideas in much detail, or following instructions accurately. If you are concerned about your child’s language skills, we can help!
Literacy Skills
‘Literacy’ is the term used to describe reading, spelling and writing. To have strong literacy skills, a child must understand that spoken sounds in English can be represented in symbols (writing/print), and they need to know which symbols to use and when. Prep and Grade 1 teachers are usually very good at picking up on children who are having difficulty with their literacy skills. If this sounds like your child, we can help!
Social Skills
Social skills are a crucial part of all human interactions. They are the skills needed to recognise what is happening in an interaction and how to respond, in addition to speaking. This can include skills such as taking turns in a conversation, changing topics smoothly, reading body cues, and using the right voice volume. When left unsupported, children with social skills difficulties can find it challenging to build and maintain friendships and communicate confidently in social environments. If you believe that your child may require support to develop their social skills, we can help!
Feeding Skills
Feeding skills are just that; the skills we need to successfully accept a variety of foods (different tastes, textures, consistencies, colours, shapes, temperatures), chew them, and swallow them. After six weeks of age, feeding is not an automatic process, and many children need help to learn how to eat an adequate variety and amount of food. If your child is a picky eater or problem feeder, we can help!
Still not sure if your child needs Speech Pathology support?
How We Do It
We are a mobile service, which means we come to your child, whether they are at home, school or daycare. With Umbrella Speech, the journey looks something like this:
- Free phone consultation to make sure we are the right fit for what your child needs
- Initial Assessment session/s
- Written Report
- Feedback and goal setting session
- Therapy block as needed
- Review of progress and goals in the first week of each school holiday break
- We all have a week’s break in the second week of school holidays (and longer over Christmas)
- We repeat this cycle from steps 4 onward each school term
PLEASE NOTE: We do not have a clinic for you to come to at this stage. If you require this, then we may not be the right fit for you.
